Here at Buchanan Dental Arts, your oral health is our utmost priority which is why we make sure you are provided with all the services you need to address your specific dental needs.

One of the most crucial procedures necessary to be performed in order to improve or preserve the oral health of a patient is a wisdom tooth extraction. It may not sound as exciting as the other dental treatments but it’s just as equally important. Wisdom tooth extraction is performed in order to prevent potential problems from coming out in the future.

Some of the conditions that require wisdom tooth extraction are:

  • Your jaw does not have not enough space for the growth of the wisdom tooth and if it is not extracted, it will not be able to break through your gums. This condition is referred to as impacted wisdom tooth. If left untreated, the tooth may become prone to damage and decay, and you will be at risk of the spread of bacteria.
  • Your wisdom tooth may break as it tries to emerge from your gums and this can result in the growth of flap tissue over the tooth. This flap can trap food and bacteria and may lead to an infection. Redness, swelling and pain are the indications of an existing infection.
  • An impacted wisdom tooth can result in more complicated problems such as an infection, damage to the adjacent teeth, supporting bones or can even result to a cyst.
  • The growth of the wisdom tooth may come out in an awkward angle or position. It could be facing forward or backward or to either side.

Wisdom tooth extraction is important in order to prevent the following problems:

  • Overcrowding in the back part of your teeth
  • Your wisdom tooth might get stuck in your jaw and may not even come break through your gums
  • Swollen or painful gums or an infection caused by a flap covering the tooth that has emerged midway
  • Tooth decay, cavities and gum problem that can be a result of ineffective brushing and flossing due to the abnormal position of the wisdom tooth in the gums

How is wisdom tooth extraction performed?

Before removing the wisdom tooth, local anesthesia is administered to numb the area of the affected tooth. If there is more than one wisdom tooth that will have to be pulled out, a general anesthesia may be required. A surgery will be performed to remove the wisdom tooth and to remove any gum tissue or bone over the tooth. We will then pull out the tooth by separating the tissue connecting the bone to your tooth. After the extraction, stitches may be required to close the wound and control bleeding.
