Emergency Dentistry Q & A

What do emergency dentists do?

An emergency dentist addresses any dental problem that requires immediate treatment to stop ongoing tissue bleeding, alleviate severe pain, or save a tooth. Dental emergencies are typically any situation in which you need to save a broken or knocked-out tooth.

Getting to Buchanan Dental Arts within 30 minutes of your tooth or mouth injury could mean the difference between saving or losing the tooth.

When should I call an emergency dentist?

It's never a bad idea to find emergency dental care if you're concerned about a severe oral injury or condition for yourself or a member of your family. Some situations that are considered dental emergencies include:

  • A loose permanent tooth
  • Severe tooth or mouth pain
  • Bleeding inside your mouth from your tongue, gums, or cheeks
  • Trauma to your face or mouth
  • Swelling in your tongue, gums, or mouth
  • A severely cracked or broken tooth
  • A cut or tear on your lips

If you chip a tooth, but it doesn’t appear as if you may lose the tooth entirely, it may not be a dental emergency. With that said, don't hesitate to speak with one of Buchanan Dental Arts' experienced dentists. They'll explain how to handle your tooth until you can visit the office.

What do I do with a knocked-out tooth?

It's one of the most severe dental emergencies. Put off going to the dentist and there's a good chance you'll lose the tooth for good. In this situation, clean both the injured tooth and inside your mouth. Rinse your mouth and tooth with lukewarm water. Do your best to avoid touching the tooth's roots.

As you rinse the tooth, hold it by the top part (the crown). If you can, hold the cleaned tooth by the crown and reinsert it into the empty socket. Close your mouth slowly. Hold the tooth in place with your fingers or gently bite down on it to help it stay in place until you can visit Buchanan Dental Arts. Call the office right away, or have someone call for you who can explain the situation.

If you are unable to place the tooth back into its socket, put your tooth in a small cup of milk to help preserve it until you get to the dental office. Buchanan Dental Arts is here for you. Call for calm, expert assistance in the event of a dental emergency.
